Peltier Air Conditioning

Testing whether thermoelectric modules could stand in for a compressor - and finding exactly where they fall short.

An experiment to test whether Peltier thermoelectric modules could replace a conventional compressor for air conditioning. The build used two 6V Peltier modules with a water-cooling loop to carry heat away from the hot side.

The interesting result was the negative one: characterising where the approach breaks down, and why compressors still win for this job.

Why the hot side is the whole problem

A Peltier module does not destroy heat; it moves it. Every watt of cooling on the cold side, plus the module's own electrical losses, has to leave through the hot side. If that heat is not removed aggressively, the hot side warms, the temperature differential collapses, and cooling stops. The water loop exists entirely to fight that, and it is where the efficiency goes.

The honest conclusion

Across the tests the coefficient of performance stayed well below a compressor cycle. The value of the project was learning to measure that cleanly and understand the physics behind it, rather than proving a predetermined result.
